MALDEN, Mass. — The Malden woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a middle school PTO pleaded not guilty Wednesday.
Former Forestdale PTO Treasurer Jane Marenghi did not have a comment at Malden District Court regarding the allegations she used her position to take thousands in PTO cash for her own use.
An affidavit filed by Middlesex County investigators says they found more than 50 questionable transactions over an 18-month period, totaling $10,836 in cash. It also says that Marenghi threatened Forestdale Principal Don Concannon when he confronted her about missing money.
Her husband, Mossimo Mareghi, denied the intimidation charge regarding the principal, pointing to Concannon’s size in relation to his wife’s. He also said other PTO members all used the account from time to time, and she wasn’t the only one spending money.
“All the PTO members have access to the credit card and they all individually make purchases and orders,” he said.
The current Forestdale PTO Board said, "The PTO board has provided the DA's office with a victim witness statement today. All facts and figures have been given to the Malden Police. I'm sure you can request a copy from them."
Interim Superintendent Dr. Charles Grandson called the situation “deeply concerning.”
"The indictment of this parent is deeply concerning to the Malden Public Schools. The School Department has worked cooperatively with the appropriate law enforcement personnel and will continue to do so. Since this matter is the subject of an ongoing investigation I cannot make any further comment."
Jane was let out on personal recognizance.
