LOWELL, Mass. — The apartment complex where a mother was beaten to death in front of her special needs son has had more than 500 calls to emergency dispatchers in the last year.
Lowell city councilor Rodney Elliot says from November 2015 to November of this year, police responded to 573 calls at the Westminster apartment complex and now he wants to hold their management accountable.
“We have a police officer here essentially every day responding to calls and that's not acceptable," said Elliot.
In November, a woman was attacked and killed by a group of people in the parking lot in front of her special needs son. Residents said that's just the latest violent incident.
Residents said they don't feel safe here at all. One man told FOX25 he was afraid to go on camera because he didn't want management to find out how he feels.
Lowell's assistant city manager said the city, along with the police superintendent, are working to meet with apartment managers. They hope to have a final plan of action by the end of the week.
FOX25 went to speak with local manager, but we were told they couldn't comment and were referred to their corporate office in New York. We called and left a voicemail, but have not heard back.
“Public safety is a priority. they have to step up,” he told FOX25.
Elliott said it should be management's responsibility to pay for any safety measures. He wants security guards, cameras, and a police officer patrolling the complex at all times.
