Investigation underway after 10 guinea pigs rescued from Leominster pond

LEOMINSTER, Mass. — Authorities are investigating after 10 guinea pigs were rescued from a pond at Leominster State Park Wednesday night.

Officers from the Wachusett Regional Dispatch received a call that 7 guinea pigs were in the water at Paradise Pond and they couldn’t be reached by boat, according to police. Animal control units from Sterling and Holden came equipped with kayaks and other equipment to initiate the rescue.

When they arrived on scene, Princeton Fire officials say they found 10 guinea pigs running along the shore and rounded them up, placing them in a box for further evaluation.

It is unclear how long the animals were in the water for.

One of the guinea pigs appeared to have bites from a larger animal and was transported to Tufts Small Animal Hospital.

The other 9 animals were evaluated and transported back to the Sterling Police Department, where they were held overnight while a local rescue shelter prepares for their arrival.

Anyone with information regarding the ownership of these guinea pigs or any activity at Paradise Pond related to this incident is asked to contact police.
