WEST BROOKFIELD, Mass. — A Great Horned Owl spent some brief time in a jail cell after being rescued by a Massachusetts trooper recently, state police said.
Trooper Samuel Muto of the Massachusetts State Police Marine Unit saw the injured owl in West Brookfield during a recent commute, state police said.
“After resisting briefly, the owl was bundled in an MSP jacket, whisked off to the barracks, ‘held’ in Cell #1, & then transported to Tufts animal hospital for care,” state police said in a tweet on Wednesday.
A photograph showed the owl perched upon a small sink at the state police barracks.

The Great Horned Owl is one of the most common owls in North America, according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
“With its long, earlike tufts, intimidating yellow-eyed stare, and deep hooting voice, the Great Horned Owl is the quintessential owl of storybooks,” the lab’s website, allaboutbirds.org, states.
“This powerful predator can take down birds and mammals even larger than itself, but it also dines on daintier fare such as tiny scorpions, mice, and frogs,” the website states.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
