United planes make contact at Boston’s Logan Airport days after close call on runway

BOSTON — An investigation is underway after two United Airlines planes made contact with one another on the tarmac at Boston’s Logan International Airport on Monday morning, just days after a pair of other planes came close to colliding, officials said.

A United flight departing for Newark clipped another United flight that was set to depart for Denver as it was pushed back from the gate, according to the Massachusetts Port Authority and the Federal Aviation Administration.

In a statement, the FAA said, “As a tow tug was pushing it back from the gate at Boston Logan International Airport, the right wing of United Airlines Flight 515 struck the tail of United Airlines Flight 267 around 8:30 a.m. local time this morning. Both aircraft were Boeing 737s that were scheduled for departure. The FAA will investigate.”

A United spokesperson said passengers were removed from both planes and that arrangements were made to get them to their destinations on a different aircraft.

There were no reported injuries.

The incident comes after a JetBlue pilot last week was forced to take “evasive action” to avoid a collision with a private jet on Logan’s airfield.

Investigators said a Learjet 60 took off without clearance just as the JetBlue flight was trying to land on an intersecting runway.

Passengers on that JetBlue flight from Nashville to Boston were pretty shaken up after such a close call.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
