BOSTON — Transit Police here in Massachusetts are trying to reassure passengers on the MBTA after a shooting at a subway station in New York City left several people wounded and injured.

“At this time, there is no evidence, credible or otherwise, to suggest the MBTA system is a potential target,” according to a statement from Transit Police.

“As the MBTA closely monitors the events in New York, Transit Police officials are engaged with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to share and obtain any intelligence available,” according to the statement.

Governor Baker, speaking at an event on Cape Cod honoring a fallen Yarmouth Police officer, said state public safety officials have been in close contact with federal law enforcement and echoed comments that there appears to be no threat here in Massachusetts.

The Boston Police Department says it is monitoring the situation and are in close contact with the NYPD. Boston Police Superintendent-In-Chief Gregory Long spoke at a news conference with Mayor Michelle Wu about the extra security that people may see in Boston in the days ahead. Boston Police say there is “no credible threat here in Boston.

The FBI Boston Division is also monitoring events in Brooklyn. “At this point in time, FBI Boston has no specific, credible information that would suggest a pending threat to our area of responsibility,” according to the FBI statement sent to Boston 25 News

Massachusett State Police say they are monitoring intelligence related to the subway shooting in NYC “in coordination with our federal and local law enforcement partners” according to a post to social media.

“While the suspect’s identity and motive remain unknown at this time, currently available information does not indicate any threat to Massachusetts.,” according to a statement released on social media by State Police Colonel Mason.

“We, along with our partners, routinely deploy a multi-layered security plan at major transportation hubs and critical infrastructure sites, and that operational stance remains in effect today. Furthermore, our operations plans for major event security, such as those in place for the Boston Marathon, are dynamic and scalable as dictated by current intelligence, and can be adapted as necessary.

If the ongoing investigation in New York leads to information relevant to the immediate safety of Massachusetts residents, we will update our law enforcement partners and the public accordingly” the statement continues.

Transit Police officials say they employ a multi-layered approach to safeguarding the MBTA system.

“To reassure our riders, the Transit Police Department has increased the number of uniformed officers on the system and deployed additional Explosive Detection K9 teams to perform protective sweeps,” said the statement. “There are also actions police will employ that will not be visible to the riding public.”

“If riders using the T see anything out of the ordinary, they are urged to contact Transit Police or MBTA personnel immediately,” said Transit Police.
