TEWKSBURY, Mass. — The Massachusetts State Police have identified the operator of a fatal single-vehicle crash that happened at 12:11 p.m. Friday, May 28, in Tewksbury.
Dave Procopio, director of Media Communications for MSP, told Boston 25 the accident occurred when a Freightliner M2 box truck was heading southbound on I-93, north of Exit 35, in Tewksbury.
Officials believe at this moment the operator fell asleep, causing the truck to drift to the right and collide with the guardrail.
This resulted in the truck entering the grass shoulder of the road, where it struck an electrical box and rolled onto the driver’s side.
Procopio confirmed that the operator, later identified as Simon Daponta, 19, of Malden, suffered fatal injuries. There were two passengers, a 41-year-old Medford man and a 29-year-old Taunton man, who was not injured from the crash.
Police added that there were no other vehicles involved in the accident. The crash investigation is being conducted by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police, the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
