13th annual African American Ball raises money; honors culture to close out Black History Month

ROXBURY, Mass. — Dozens gathered for the African American Ball at the Yawkey Boys and Girls club in Roxbury Saturday.

“It’s very important to educate people that we do have a culture and educate people on our culture,” said Michael Blakely, Founder and CEO of the Edward & Earlean Blakely Creative Arts Center.

Blakely hosted the event, and he says this ball helps raise scholarship money for low income families through the Boys and Girls club.

“I’m more about us coming together in peace and harmony, you know negative is always going to be what negative is,” said Blakely. “Positive is what we really need and I think everybody should do whatever measure they can. If you can only do a little bit today, just do that but at least do something that will make a difference in someone else’s life.”

The event also honors those who have made significant contributions to the African American community in Boston over the last year.

“There’s an incredible combination of celebrating trailblazers and heroes and people who have been putting in the work from healthcare to our small businesses to folks in government and education,” said Boston mayor Michelle Wu. “And then to really all focus our energy in highlighting and elevating important organizations that can really benefit and continue passing that on to the next generation.”
