State Police investigating fatal drowning at Hathaway’s Pond

BARNSTABLE, Mass. — State Police detectives are investigating a fatal drowning that happened on Hathaway’s Pond on Sunday.

According to authorities, Barnstable Police were called to the pond shortly after 6 p.m. for reports of a missing swimmer and possible drowning.

The swimmer, who was alone when he went missing, was found in about 20 feet of water by rescue divers. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police say he died within 90 minutes after the initial call for help.

Preliminary investigation suggests the swimmer waded out beyond the swimming area and then went under.

The name of the swimmer is being withheld pending identification confirmation and family notification. He was a man in his early 30s from Connecticut.

State Police continue to investigate this incident.
