WAYLAND, Mass. — A man who was being sought by Wayland Police for asking a child to get into his vehicle was instead trying to help the girl safely cross the street, police said Saturday.
The unidentified man, whose sketch was released to media outlets on Thursday, walked into the Wayland Police Station on Saturday and “informed officers that he was the individual that we were looking to speak to regarding the Rice Road incident,” police said in a statement.
A police interview with the man found that he was the man they were looking for, but that he was not trying to lure the girl into his vehicle.
“Due to the individual’s heavy accent, it was determined to be a misunderstanding of what was said,” police said. “Being from the area, the male party knows the road to be dangerous, especially for a child, and was only trying to help her safely cross the street.”
“With this new information officers spoke with the child and it was determined that the male was the individual and that the matter is in fact resolved,” police said.
