Off-duty Wareham police officer helps rescue dog from burning Onset home

ONSET, Mass. — An off-duty Wareham police officer rescued a dog from a burning mobile home in Onset Friday afternoon.

The fire at the Silver Lake Mobile Home Park on Cranberry Highway was reported just after 4 p.m.

Wareham Police Officer Christopher Corner said he was on his way home from work when he saw a black cloud of smoke. He turned on his police radio, heard the call for the fire and raced to the scene.

“I found there was a trailer fully involved and neighbors were gathered on the porch,” Corner told Boston 25 News. “I went up there and I asked if anybody was inside. They said a dog. So we got the door open, I went in and we herded the dog out of the house.”

The German Shepherd, named Sergeant, wasn’t hurt.

Corner then went back into the home to make sure no one else was inside.

"The second time I got overwhelmed a little bit," Corner said. "I couldn't see because of the smoke and then the windows started popping."

Corner evacuated the neighboring trailers as a precaution. He also also able to provide incoming first responders with updated information by radio.

Onset Fire Chief Ray Goodwin said firefighters arrived to find heavy fire consuming the home, which he said is a total loss. A neighboring trailer and motel also suffered radiant heat damage.

A firefighter was taken to Tobey Hospital to be treated for a non-life threatening injury, according to Goodwin.

The American Red Cross is helping the two people and the dog who were displaced by the fire.

The couple who owns the home told Wareham Week they were on their way home from work when they heard their trailer was on fire. They said they had no idea what could have caused the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Onset's fire investigator, Wareham Police and the state fire marshal.

Corner is no stranger to making a heroic rescue. He was recognized in December of 2018 for saving a woman from a burning car.

“Chris jumped into action even after working a double shift on patrol," Wareham Police Chief John Walcek said. "He is an excellent police officer who gives 100 percent all of the time.”
