Foxboro, Mass. — Although the New England Patriots are unlikely to make eight AFC Championship Games in the 2020′s like they did the previous decade, their spot is still secure near the top of at least one NFL list. The Patriots were named the NFL’s second most valuable franchise for an 11th straight year by Forbes Magazine on Monday.
The business magazine cited the Patriots’ $6.4 billion value as the second highest in the league, behind only Dallas’ $8 billion valuation. According to Forbes, the Patriots’ 2022 value is a 28 percent increase from the previous years’ value of $5 billion.
The reigning Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams were named the third most valuable franchise with an estimated value of $6.2 billion.
Game-receipts, player expenses and stadium purchase price are among the criteria Forbes uses to calculate each team’s value.
In December of 2021, the Patriots announced a series of renovations to update Gillette Stadium. The facelift will be localized primarily in the north end of the 20-year-old stadium. In addition to a new 370-feet-by-60-feet video board, 75,000-square feet of glass will enclose new indoor hospitality and function spaces that will be available to patrons year-round.
Fans will also be able to visit -and stand upon- a new 218-foot tall lighthouse that will overlook the stadium. According to a statement from the team, the project is slated as a $225 million investment for Gillette Stadium as the arena enter its’ third decade of use.
The last time the Patriots finished any lower than second in the NFL’s financial hierarchy was 2011 when they were beat out by the then-Washington Redskins.
