Patriots head coach Bill Belichick announces team captains for upcoming season

FOXBORO, Mass. — New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on Wednesday announced his team captains for the upcoming NFL season.

Second-year quarterback Mac Jones was named a captain for the first time in his career.

“I want to become an even better leader, and I think we have great guys around us that make everything better,” Jones said of being picked as a captain. “Great coaches, great organization and we’ve just got to build. I’m going to learn from the older guys like I did when I first got here and continue to do that.”

Other players who were named captains include center David Andrews, safety Devin McCourty, linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, defensive lineman Deatrich Wise, and special teams veteran Matthew Slater.

Andrews, McCourty, and Slater have all captained several prior Patriots teams. Bentley is now a two-time captain, while Wise is a first-time captain.

New England begins regular season play on Sunday in Miami against the Dolphins.
