NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — A fire tore through a New Bedford home Thursday afternoon killing one person and leaving three people in critical condition, fire officials said.
“This is a devastating tragedy for a whole family,” said Chief Kruger. “Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones right now.”
Firefighters were called to a two-story home on Chestnut Street where two people were trapped on the second floor with flames shooting out of the windows. Crews used ground ladders to make entry through windows and up an interior stairway where they rescued one man and one woman from a second-floor bedroom.
Both victims were transported to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead while the woman is in critical condition.
Two other adults were able to escape the building and were also transported for serious injuries.
The home had working smoke alarms, which may have helped prevent an even greater tragedy, said Chief Kruger.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known and remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshals Office.
The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is assisting five displaced residents.
