NTSB: Man killed on MBTA Red Line was trying to exit train

BOSTON — A 39-year-old man killed on the MBTA Red Line last weekend was exiting the train when he got his arm stuck in a door, the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday.

Robinson Lalin died Sunday morning after investigators said he was dragged to his death inside the Broadway Station. The NTSB’s update Friday corrected an assumption by Lalin’s family that he was trying to board the train moments before he died.

“If he was exiting the train, I figure the conductor wasn’t paying attention,” said Kelvin Lalin, Robinson’s nephew.

The NTSB said it completed the on-scene position of its investigation and will release its report in the next 30 days. Kelvin said investigators have not given the family much information. He believes the MBTA has video of the incident, but his family has not seen it.

“That station is flooded with cameras,” Kelvin said. “I’m pretty sure they have the beginning and end of this tragedy.”

The MBTA Safety, Health & Environment Subcommittee did not discuss the investigation during a virtual meeting Thursday, but member Bob Butler did address Lalin’s death.

“I would like to extend my condolences to the Robinson Lalin family,” Butler said. “It’s a tragedy that happened and we feel the pain.”

An MBTA spokesperson said the NTSB asked the Authority not to comment on the investigation.

“The Red Line cars and all of their components, including doors, are safe. Red Line trains make hundreds of daily trips, carrying tens of thousands of riders every day without incident,” MBTA Spokesperson Joe Pesaturo said in an email. “MBTA vehicle maintenance personnel work around the clock to keep the Red Line fleet operating in a state-of-good-repair while hundreds of new Red Line cars are delivered. Regularly scheduled inspections of subway cars include the testing and maintaining of door components.”

The Lalin family organized a GoFundMe account to pay for funeral expenses. Lalin left behind two children.

“Our family is hurting. Our family is devastated,” Kelvin said. “A part of us is gone right now.”
