Nine families displaced, and two injured after multi-alarm fire in Fitchburg

DOZENS OF PEOPLE WERE EVACUATED FROM THIS APARTMENT BUILDING ON CARRIAGEWAY DRIVE IN FITCHBURG SATURDAY FOR A 3-ALARM FIRE.

FITCHBURG, Mass. — Fitchburg Fire Department responded to a 3-alarm fire Saturday morning at an apartment building on Carriageway Drive where dozens of people were evacuated.

Two people were injured in the Saturday morning fire including a Police Officer and a resident of the building. Both suffered minor injuries. Patrick Roy, the Fitchburg Fire Captain, said the officer who was injured is expected to be okay after being checked out by medical personnel. The resident was transported to a local area hospital for smoke inhalation.

Fire officials said the fire quickly spread to all four floors of the elderly apartment building. Captain Roy said he’s thankful for the help from surrounding towns to get this blaze under control.

“It’s a high-risk community it’s all elderly we had fire showing first-floor overlapping top floor the guys did a great job they pulled the line right away knocked it down in the exterior and then went in and got it,” said Cpt. Roy.

The Salvation Army of Fitchburg was on the scene Saturday morning providing support and assistance to the evacuees of the building. They transported more than a dozen people to a temporary shelter.

For the second day in a row, Fitchburg fire officials worked a multiple-alarm fire. After Friday’s massive blaze on Hartford St. in Fitchburg, left one was dead and two injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
