A Vietnam war veteran that would’ve otherwise been laid to rest alone will instead be joined by a group of motorcyclists that have made it their mission to ensure no one who has ever served will have an unattended funeral.
When Anthony Meizis passed away, director for Weymouth’s McDonald Keohane funeral home Cara Johnson says his funeral was already prepaid and taken care of. But Meizis never married and without a spouse or kids, the former Navy seaman’s only relative nearby was an elderly and disabled cousin who could not attend the service in Bourne.
That’s when Johnson remembered Boston 25 News’ reporting on the Department of Mass American Legion Riders and the previous times they’ve attended funeral services for veterans that died alone.
“I had heard of your organization, making sure that no veteran was buried alone, and I would be forever grateful if you would assist me in escorting him to Bourne for his burial and military honors. Especially since he loved motorcycles,” Johnson wrote to the riders.
The funeral procession will begin at the funeral home on Main Street South in Weymouth at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning. The motorcyclists will then ride down with Meizis for the burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne where Meizis will receive military honors and a priest will perform a committal service.
