More than a dozen Taylor Farms products recalled over Salmonella concerns

As the Cyclospora outbreak continues across several states, more than a dozen Taylor Farms products have been recalled over salmonella concerns.

The Taylor Farms products being recalled include burritos, salsa, and guacamole over concerns that jalapeno peppers included in them may be contaminated with Salmonella.

“Check your refrigerator, check your freezer, make sure you don’t have any of the recalled product, and be informed of the risks,” Barbara Kowalcyk, Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition Security at George Washington University, said.

The products were sold in major retailers like Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, and Whole Foods in 26 states including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Anyone who purchased the recalled products is encouraged to get rid of them immediately.

“These pathogens, whether it’s a parasite or a bacteria, really do like hot humid weather, so we have kind of our cyclospora season, our salmonella season, and unfortunately, we’re in that right now,” Kowalcyk said.

Taylor Fresh Foods, which does business as Taylor Farms, said it’s no longer sourcing food from the company the products came from in Mexico.

This recall comes as the cyclospora outbreak continues across 15 states, six of which were recently added, including New Hampshire.

“One of the reasons we’re seeing more of these is that investigations are undergoing, so we’re getting the results back,” Wade Syers, Food Safety and Security Specialist, MSU Extension, said.

According to the CDC, more than 6,000 cases have been linked to this specific Cyclospora outbreak with nearly 300 hospitalizations and two people have died.

The outbreak has been linked to Taylor Farms’ shredded iceberg lettuce, but other products may have caused some of the illnesses. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration still has not confirmed what caused several clusters of the outbreak.

“It’s going to take some backwards investigation once these outbreaks and this season is done to really kind of identify what’s going on,” James Rogers, Director of Food Safety for Consumer Reports, said.

As of Monday, Taylor Fresh Foods stated it is not aware of any reported illnesses linked to its products containing jalapeños.
