BOSTON — Fred Toucher, co-host of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s popular morning drive program, is taking an extended leave of absence after a call from a listener led to an alarming, but life-saving doctor’s appointment.
Toucher, who has been battling voice issues for a significant period of time, recently visited a throat doctor on the recommendation of a listener who heard him talking on the “Toucher and Rich” show.
In a statement, Toucher explained, “My voice has been messed up for a long time. I had been going to doctors and they didn’t seem overly concerned. However, a listener heard me and put me in touch with a doctor he works with. I went and things didn’t go great. He found some things in my throat that concerned him. He told me not to worry because he could fix all of it. Not to sound dramatic but it is possible a listener saved my life by setting up that appointment.”
Toucher didn’t expand upon the nature of his throat problem aside from the fact that the treatment he will be getting is very costly and not covered by insurance.
In a tweet, Toucher said it was the same voice doctor who has worked with Adele and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.
“I will be back. That is for sure,” Toucher added. “In the meantime...I’m going to write a bunch of stuff for the website. So you will know what’s up with me if you choose to care.”
Toucher, and co-host Rich Shertenlieb, first started their Boston show together at WBCN in 2006. They later shifted to The Sports Hub when it launched to the public in 2009.
The Toucher and Rich show can be heard Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
