Jamaica Plain residents worried about uptick in coyotes after dog snatched out of yard

JAMAICA PLAIN, Mass. — Melissa Foley got her four little girls whistles that they have to wear when they leave the house.

After a coyote grabbed a neighbor’s dog and walked right past her Jamaica Plain house at 8 a.m. last Friday morning. A neighbor captured video of the coyote carrying away the small dog.

“It was really disappointing to see that so casually walking down the street with someone’s pet… which was scary,” said Melissa Foley a Jamaica Plain mother.

Other neighbors saw it too. Foley says coyotes are constantly outside her home.

And since the dog was snatched she’s very concerned about her daughters.

“They’re out at all times of the day. We see them in the morning, at noon at 2 p.m., 3 p.m. Certainly they are at dusk as well but the daytime is where I am worried,” said Foley.

Not only are the coyotes brazen enough to walk down the street in the middle of the day but they are pretty agile too. The one that got that small dog jumped a four-foot fence then jumped back over and was caught on video by a neighbor just down the street.

Foley has contacted animal control, 311, wildlife services, and even her city councilor.

“They told me to reach out to Environmental Police if it looks like there’s a major danger. But nothing’s really been done.”

So, Foley is taking her own safety measures by buying the whistles but she says she’s at her wits end.

“I’m not sure what else to do. We’ve called everyone, and we’ve done everything. Now we’re looking into fences.”

Foley hopes the City Councilor Lara, who she contacted can help coordinate better fences along cemeteries behind her house where she says those coyotes are living.
