BOSTON — The cost to fly, fuel up and even eat – all at a 41-year high. But there are ways experts say you can battle inflation.
A big one is to stay local and do some day trips instead of spending big bucks on a traditional vacation.
“Have you ever considered taking the train to the beaches in Newburyport or Gloucester?” asked John Monahan.
“Yeah, absolutely I think it’s super convenient and especially during this time,” said Alison Maruscczak, who was just leaving work in Boston.
The MBTA commuter rail runs to Gloucester, Rockport and Newburyport. You could also opt to go south to Scituate or Plymouth.
All have great beaches, and there’s lots to do. And by taking the train you’ll also beat the steep prices at the pump.
Another unexpected price saver: ticket prices for sporting events are down 8 percent.
“It’s very, very shocking. I mean, it would be the last place I would expect for prices to go down honestly, with everything going through the roof,” said Diana Beltrao, of East Boston.
So why not check out a game at Fenway, the Woo Sox in Worcester or even the New England Revolution at Gillette?
Here’s another tip: Why not take in a summer movie? Ticket prices are up, but only 1.1 percent
Plus, the AC in theaters makes them a great way to beat the summer heat.
And we can’t forget the summer barbecue. It’s a must, and experts say you can keep grilling by looking for deals. Check for sales to get good deals on meat, and remember, pork is cheaper.
But while grocery prices have gone up, not everything is equal.
- Citrus fruit is up 18%
- But apples are only up 6%
- And bananas are up just 4%
So, with prices up across the board, Bostonians like the idea of side-stepping inflation and staying local to enjoy all that New England has to offer.
“With the prices the way they are, and the chaos that they are right now, I just don’t think it’s worth it. I absolutely agree. I feel it’s best to save and just explore your own city or the surrounding areas,” said Beltrao.
