Good Samaritans jump in to help 80-year-old man who fell on tracks

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — An 80-year-old man fell several feet onto the tracks at the Central Square MBTA stop right as a train was leaving. Thankfully for him, that train was on the opposite side. Cambridge EMS tells us he fell onto tracks after he had a medical emergency.

The incident took place on March 16, 2022. Boston 25 News obtained the video Thursday, following a Freedom of Information Act request filed on the day of the incident.

“That’s terrible,” said one passenger named Erin. “I know a lot of other cities around the world have barriers. I would support that in Boston, but I would prioritize faster service first.”

After he fell, you can see on video a couple of Good Samaritans jump down and get him out by the time EMS got there and certainly before any train came by.

“That’s scary,” said riders David Weden and Kristen Figueroa. “First of all, it’s a good job people jumped in there. I always worry because I hear the tracks are electric, but good job by those guys to get in there.”

“Oh man, I’m just glad people were there to try and help him back up,” said Kyle Ryder of Cambridge. “That’s what I would want. You got a watch out for the older folks down there.

“That’s unfortunate I hope he’s fine,” said Hari Haran. “I would like to think I would’ve helped but you never know if you’re in that situation.”

Medics took him to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, he was conscious and alert but EMS tells us he did have a cut on his head and some back pain.
