Gas leak in Chelsea prompts evacuations, street closure

CHELSEA, Mass. — The Chelsea Fire Department is working to contain an ongoing gas leak on Summit Ave.

The leak came after a contractor hit a gas line in the area. Firefighters evacuated a number of homes as a precaution.

The National Grid is on scene shutting the gas off.

Summit Ave is closed to traffic while crews respond to the incident. The public is asked to avoid this area.

There is currently no broad threat to the community. Once the line is repaired, the National Grid will turn the gas back on.

Chelsea City Hall will announce an update when the repair is complete, and Summit Ave is reopened.
