Owner of legendary Kowloon restaurant dies at 95

One of the most iconic restaurants in the Boston area has lost its matriarch.

In a post on its Twitter page, Kowloon announced that founder Madeline Wong has passed away at the age of 95.

“Throughout her 95 years, she lived life to its fullest, and was an incredible and amazing person,” the Route 1 Asian restaurant said on Twitter.

Established in the halls of an ice cream parlor in 1950, Kowloon is easily recognizable by its oversized tiki statue above the entrance and is also well known for its support of Saugus community programs.

In 2001, the Wong family was inducted into the Hospitality Hall of Fame by the Massachusetts Restaurant Association for “their outstanding contributions to the state’s restaurant industry, as well as for their support of charitable and community programs in Saugus.”
