PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Firefighters in Plymouth simultaneously battled two house fires Tuesday morning.
Chief Ed Bradley told Boston 25 News the call for the first fire came in around 6:15 a.m. A vacant summer home on Cranford Road in Myles Standish State Forest burned to the ground.
Bradley said the fire wasn't reported until the sun came up and by then the home had already been destroyed. He added there was no fire hydrants in the area and access to water was an issue.
Firefighters responded to another house fire around 6:40 a.m. on Truman Avenue in Manomet. Pictures from the scene show thick, black smoke pouring out of the front and side doors.
Bradley said the two adults and six children who were in the home at the time of the fire got out safely.
“All escaped unharmed due to working smoke detectors which alerted the occupants,” Bradley told Boston 25 News. “Smoke detectors save lives.”
The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
The cause of both fires remains under investigation. Investigators from the Plymouth Fire Department and state police detectives assigned to the state fire marshal's office are at the scene of both fires.
The Massachusetts Environmental Police and the Massachusetts Department of Conversation and Recreation are also assisting at the scene of the fire in Myles Standish State Forest.
Bradley said his investigators and Plymouth Police are also inspecting the homes in and around Cranford Road for any signs of breaking and entering or clues that could help in their fire investigation. The homes in the area are predominantly summer homes.
Bradley praised the work of firefighters, saying two fires at the same time drains resources quickly and wears the firefighters out.
Bradley also thanked the Bourne and Kingston fire departments for assisting his department during the fires. The Bourne Fire Department’s engine company responded to the fire on Truman Avenue. The Kingston Fire Department’s engine company handled other 911 calls in Plymouth.
