2 dogs killed, 4 people displaced in fire above Wakefield pizza shop

WAKEFIELD, Mass — A fire that spread to two apartments above a Wakefield pizza shop killed two dogs Sunday afternoon.

Although fire officials don’t know where the fire began, the fire spread to the two apartments above Charlie’s on Main around 4:00 p.m.

Several fire trucks responded to the blaze on Main Street, an area that receives a lot of foot traffic.

Fire crews were not able to save the two dogs in the apartments on the second and third floors.

The fire spread quickly through the building and posed a threat to other businesses on both sides, including a 130-bed assisted living facility.

A crowd gathered to watch fire crews douse the enflamed building with water.

“It took over in a matter of minutes,” said Gary Winthorpe. “It’s a horrible thing to be honest. That pizza place was wicked good.”

Arthur Wahlberg, the oldest Wahlberg brother, lives right around the corner and is friends with the owner of the popular pizza shop that was heavily damaged in the 4-alarm fire.

“It’s devastating they just opened up a couple years ago,” said Wahlberg. “They’re the nicest people you hate to see this happen.”

No people were hurt in the fire.

Fire investigators are still working to pinpoint the cause of the fire in this building that was gutted by flames.

A total of four tenants are displaced. A relative tells Boston 25 that one of them is a couple who is newly engaged and have been saving up to buy their first house together.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
