Fire crews responded to fire at the old Edison plant in South Boston

BOSTON — Boston fire crews were called to a fire at the old Edison Power plant in South Boston Friday night.

Firefighters found flames on the roof of the building, five or six stories up.

The building was unoccupied since it was under construction, so firefighters attacked the flames from the outside.

“Everything was exterior and the building’s under construction since it’s too dangerous to go in and look around, so we found the building, flames on the top of the roof, so they just put the tower up and put it out with the tower,” said Brian Alkins, public information officer for the Boston Fire Department.

Alkins says construction debris caught fire, but the cause is still under investigation.

Just last year there was a major construction accident at this same building when three workers were hurt in a partial collapse.

One of those workers was trapped for hours.

This site is being developed by Hilco Redevelopment Partners to transform this old power plant into retail, housing and commercial space called L Street Station.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
