Fire official: Backyard grilling may have sparked fire that damaged 2 houses, 3 cars in Quincy

QUINCY, Mass — Backyard grilling may have sparked a large fire that caused extensive damage to two houses, three cars and a garage on Sea Street in Quincy on Saturday, a fire official said.

“The fire just took off,” Quincy Fire Capt. John Gillan told Boston 25 following the fire which broke out around 11:30 a.m. Saturday at 308 Sea St. in Quincy.

No injuries were reported.

Video obtained by Boston 25 shows a large plume of thick, black smoke emanating from the fire, which quickly spread to another house.

“It appears the porch caught fire and then the fire went into the house and then three cars in the driveway, the garage and the house behind it, and then the propane tank exploded,” Gillan said.

Quincy Fire Chief Joe Jackson was attending a Fire Department function “around the corner” and he responded immediately to the fire and took command, Gillan said.

Engine 6 was first on scene, and firefighters knocked down the fire within about 30 minutes, Gillan said.

“We had a large volume of smoke showing from around the city,” Gillan said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
