BOSTON — Boston’s North End erupted in celebration Sunday night after Italy claimed victory in the European Championship against England.
Joyous soccer fans swarmed Hanover Street and stopped traffic for hours.
Cheers and chants could be heard for blocks in the Italian mecca.
The party only grew louder as the night went on.
“The energy is unbelievable,” said Johnny Derienzo. “My father grew up around here. I love the game. It’s great to see them win a Euro. They haven’t won since the 60s.”
Sunday’s nail-biting tie game was decided by penalty kicks.
It’s the country’s first Euro title since 1968.
