BOSTON — Some students at Emerson College say they were trapped temporarily when an Emergency Only exit door malfunctioned during a fire drill at a residence hall on Tuesday.
“That’s really scary to think that I could have been one of those students....in the event of an actual fire that would have been not okay,” says Emerson College student, Cassandra Maisonet.
The college said in a statement that the exit door malfunctioned “during a planned fire drill.”
“After an immediate investigation by the Emerson College Police Department and college staff, it was determined that the Emergency Only exit door was programmed for an active emergency; however, it was not coded to open during a “practice drill,” the college said in a statement.
Emerson says the technology issue has been resolved and the door has been tested. It is now functioning properly.
Located on Boylston Street in Boston’s Theatre District, Emerson College has five residence halls, according to its website.
