Did you spot a chain of lights in the sky over Massachusetts Monday? Here’s what we know

A number of Boston 25 viewers sent in videos and pictures of a string of lights spotted in the sky above Massachusetts on Monday night.

The lights were actually SpaceX Starlink satellites, which were launched into orbit Sunday evening.

Viewers from Uxbridge, Avon, Weymouth, Everett, and Burlington shared video of the satellites over their communities.

Elon Musk’s company SpaceX is responsible for launching satellites into the night sky. This is part of the company’s effort to provide worldwide cellphone and internet service without the use of cellphone towers.

There are about 3,500 satellites have been put into orbit by the company. Once they reach orbit, they are no longer visible to the naked eye. That is why satellites are only visible shortly after a fresh launch. The company hopes for at least 12,000 satellites to surround the globe.

If people in Massachusetts missed the sightings Monday night, Starlink satellites are expected to still be visible in the night sky on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
