Dealerships say it’s beginning to look like a Presidents Day weekend again on their sales lots

WEST ROXBURY, Mass. — Some car dealerships telling us this is the first Presidents Day Weekend that felt like one in a long time.  People were on their lots and there were cars and trucks to look at. We were at a couple of car lots here along route 1 and definitely saw people out on a mission.

The balloons were up and in some car showrooms it looked like Presidents Day weekend. Charley Light was shopping for a new car for his wife. “People are shopping again and the parking lots are full and we are interesting in looking at a car today,” said Light. Car shoppers telling us they are starting to feel like it’s time to buy again. Manuel Gama was trying to find a larger mini-van for his family.   “We want to take advantage of some sales. Because the next one won’t be until 2-3 months from now,” said Gama

This was the scene inside Parkway Toyota of Boston on day three of the holiday weekend. Tomas Sanchez is a sales manager at Parkway Toyota of Boston. “Actually one of the biggest weekends of the year for us no matter what other holiday you pair through it,” said Sanchez. Michael Colby is the Customer Satisfaction manager at Parkway.  “We’re like the Apple Store now where most of it is done on the computer. We have a lot of like models that you can come out and test drive and get a feel for the vehicle,” said Colby.

Dealerships say people are coming into to see what they could get into but they say most of the deals involve placing orders or settling for an alternative vehicle. “This car sold on Friday and the guy was nice enough to let us have it through the he weekend so we have a Tacoma on the ground in that color to show,” said Sanchez.

We also talked to the broker who runs stresslesscar.com who says they have been helping people zero in on the car they want in the Boston area and then connecting them with the seller. Some buyers say they are just thankful there are cars out there to buy or lease again. “We are just in a spot where my wife needs a second car,” said Light.  “For us we definitely need a car soon so we decided to buy it this weekend,” said Gama.

Another interesting trend on demand -- and once again COVID-19 related. Some people are back out trying to find a reliable car because their work from home situation is changing back to in person.
