Cyber security expert provides tips to keep cell phone data secure on public wifi

Cyber security expert Robert Sicialiano spoke with Boston 25′s Vanessa Welch to provide tips and tricks to protect your phones’ data while using it in public.

According to him, the most helpful thing you can do is to just be aware of your surroundings.

Snatch and grabs are a real thing. Despite all the data security you are supposed to be doing-situational awareness- pay attention to what is going on around the perimeter of your body. Most of us when it comes to mobile phones, we’re texting, not paying attention. Situational awareness is knowing what going on around the perimeter of your body 50-100 feet at all times. if anyone is paying attention to you- unwanted attention- you will know it as it’s happening and you can can lock down your phone, put it in your pocket, pay attention, whatever you have to do.”

Sicialiano provided other tips to keep your cell phone information secure.-

-Make sure your phone is password protected. If it’s not and it gets stolen, the criminals have access to everything.

-Always log out of apps.. especially financial and banking apps.

-Make sure your phone is backed up on the cloud so you can retrieve data..

-If your phone is stolen, immediately change all the passwords connected to that device.
