Celtics star Jaylen Brown kicks off transformation project at Dorchester’s Fenelon Park

DORCHESTER — With each stroke of a paintbrush, a Dorchester basketball court was transformed Friday.

Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown joined Mayor Michelle Wu at Fenelon Park as part of Red Bull’s “Get In The Paint with Jaylen” contest.

Folks from across New England submitted designs to re-paint the park’s basketball court.

Brown says these types of events are crucial to help the community and city thrive.

“The court is going to look amazing, it’s going to look beautiful. It’s going to be a space for a lot of our young people to play and participate but this space also represents what needs to be done more here in Boston,” said Brown.

Worcester native and Northeastern student Kaiya Santos won the contest with her vibrant 1980′s vintage design.

“I think it’s very important to make an impact on the community, like Jaylen said, it’s very important we are doing things like this especially here in Boston,” said Santos.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu says Jalen’s work goes far beyond the court.

“I’m always blown away, he’ll just show up randomly, at a court and just hang out so that our young people see what’s possible reflected in their futures,” said Wu.

“Nothing fills my heart more with joy than to be able to be here, a part of my community,” said Brown.

“I think it gives hope. I think it gives the children of the community inspiration to give back to the community as well,” said Suzette, a Dorchester mom.

Brown believes projects like this make Boston more equitable and even safer.

“Being able to have a place that somebody put time and effort into becomes like a safe haven,” remarked Brown. “This is one small example of what’s going on here in these spaces in Boston. But as long as I’m here, these things will continue.”

Brown would not answer any questions regarding his future with the Celtics as the shooting guard has yet to sign his possible supermax contract extension with the Celtics.

Team President Brad Steven remains optimistic, saying just last week that he believes a deal will get done to keep Brown in Boston past this upcoming season.

Fenelon Court’s renovations should be complete by the end of August.
