Cape Cod man held without bail after kidnapping woman at gunpoint, leading police on chase

FALMOUTH, Mass. — A Cape Cod man is facing more than nine criminal charges after police say he broke into a woman’s home, kidnapped her at gunpoint, and then led police on a wild chase on Thursday afternoon.

Bryan Purdie, 32, of Falmouth is being held without bail after Friday’s arraignment, facing charges including home invasion, kidnapping, unlawful possession of a firearm, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, failing to stop for police, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, failing to stop for a school bus, and various other associated motor vehicle offenses, according to the Falmouth Police Department.

Falmouth Police responded to reports of gunshots at 31 Carriage Shop Road in Falmouth around 2 p.m. Officers said they noticed a gray BMW leaving the house at high speed.

Officers started following the BMW when they learned the operator (later identified as Bryan Purdie, M 32, Falmouth) had taken a female at gunpoint, struck her in the head with the gun, and had her in the car with him.

Purdie allegedly refused to stop for police and hit another vehicle, weaving into oncoming traffic, and passing a school bus that was stopped to let children out.

Police said when they lost sight of the vehicle, a motorist advised an officer that the vehicle turned onto Pine Ridge Road from Old Barnstable Road, which was a dead end. Officers swarmed the neighborhood where they found the vehicle stopped and Purdie on foot and immediately took him into custody.

According to police, the female was found on a nearby street and had injuries consistent with having been struck in the head with a blunt object.

A preliminary investigation determined that Purdie forcibly entered the residence home, fired a shot at a female victim but missed her, then held 4 individuals at gunpoint and took their cell phones to prevent them from attempting to call for help, according to police.

Officers believe when the female attempted to flee, he pursued her and forced her at gunpoint into the vehicle, which then led to the pursuit.

Purdie is expected to be back in court next week.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
