Bruins acquire RW Garnet Hathaway, D Dmitry Orlov from Capitals

BOSTON — The Boston Bruins loaded up for the stretch run Thursday afternoon, acquiring right winger Garnet Hathaway and defenseman Dmitry Orlov from the Washington Capitals.

The Bruins sent forward Craig Smith, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 third-round pick and a 2025 second-round pick back to the nation’s capital in return.

The Capitals retained 50% of Orlov’s $5.1 million cap hit by first trading him to Minnesota, who then flipped him to Boston in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

The defenseman has scored three goals and tallied 19 points during the 2022-’23 campaign.

Hathaway is no stranger to the New England area. The Maine native attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass before spending his college hockey career at Brown. The right winger has registered nine goals and 16 points in 59 games.

The Bruins and Capitals will meet again in Boston on April 11.
