Boat rolls off trailer, injures man in Marshfield

MARSHFIELD, Mass. — A man was seriously injured Friday after a boat rolled off its trailer and crushed him, according to the Marshfield Fire Department.

The incident happened around noon at a Town Landing, next to the Marshfield Yacht Club.

”I had heard helicopters and sirens and things coming from over by the club,” said neighbor Rick Carberry. “Two guys, two friends were trying to launch their boat and go fishing, and they made the mistake of unhooking the boat from the trailer before they had it down close to the water, and the boat rolled off the trailer.”

Carberry said it was quick-thinking by onlookers that may have helped save the man’s life. Several people worked together to lift the boat and prop it up, freeing him before first responders arrived.

”A bunch of neighbors got together and rocked the boat up enough to get the guy out and put a block underneath, and then he went off in an ambulance and hopefully he’s okay.”

According to Marshfield Fire Chief Jeff Simpson, injuries were serious with wounds to the chest, pelvis and legs. The man was transported to South Shore Hospital.

”It’s an extremely heavy boat,” said Simpson. “It was a fishing boat and the motor is obviously located on the back side of the boat, which both came down on top of the subject.”

Simpson added that people need to be careful when putting boats in the water, as summer gets underway.

”We’re praying for the patient and we’ll go from there,” he said.

”I hope the guy’s okay,” Carberry told Boston 25.
