Beach at popular Mass. seaside destination reopens, dozens of others remain closed over bacteria

NEWBURY, Mass. — A beach at a popular seaside destination on the North Shore of Massachusetts reopened to swimming Thursday morning after a ban was put in place earlier this week due to elevated levels of dangerous bacteria.

Swimmers are again welcome at Newbury Public Beach on Plum Island, days after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health discovered bacteria levels in the water that exceeded the state’s allowable limit.

“Newbury will continue to monitor the testing results and will provide updated information regarding beach safety as necessary,” officials said in a statement.

Frequent rain, such as has occurred this season, can lead to beach closures.

The state’s beach testing program monitors over 1,100 public and semi-public beaches to ensure the safety of swimmers and beachgoers and prevent pathogens spread by contamination.

Nearly 80 other beaches across the state remain closed to swimming, including destinations on the Cape and South Shore.

The state updates its public beach postings on a daily basis.
