Auburn firefighters battle large brush fire visible from Mass. Pike

AUBURN, Mass — People driving along the Pike in Auburn noticed a huge brush fire Sunday night.

The fire chief says you could only really see it from the highway since it was up on a hill.

In all, about four acres burned.

It was a challenge for firefighters to get to the fire in an isolated, wooded area, but luckily it was pretty far from any homes, and no one was in danger.

“It’s an extremely challenging area, very steep, we’re actually unable to get fire apparatus in, so we had all-terrain vehicles bringing in firefighters and water, we basically had to walk about 1500 feet into that area from the roadway,” said Chief Stephen Coleman, with the Auburn Fire Department.

While the fire is now out, fire crews will be back Monday morning to check on it for any hot spots.

Train traffic was also suspended on the CSX rail line for a few hours since this was close to those tracks.

The chief says they’re looking into whether the tracks sparked the flames.
