84-year-old man charged with vehicular homicide in Winthrop crash that killed woman

WINTHROP, Mass. — An 84-year-old East Boston man is facing vehicular homicide charges in a crash that killed a woman in Winthrop on Friday, police said.

Kenneth Thompson has been charged with motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of alcohol, and failure to stop/yield, police said.

Winthrop public safety dispatchers received multiple 911 calls at around 3:30 p.m. on Friday about a two-car accident at the intersection of Hagman Road and Walden Street.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they found a woman who had been driving a Jeep suffering from critical injuries.

First responders performed life-saving measures on the woman, who was taken by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She has not been identified.

A preliminary investigation by Winthrop Police found that a Hyundai Elantra traveling northbound on Hagman Road, driven by Thompson, collided with the Jeep, traveling on Pauline Street toward Woodside Avenue, at the intersection of Pauline Street, Hagman Road and Walden Street.

The accident remains under investigation by the Winthrop Police Department, the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, and detectives assigned to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
