CHELSEA, Mass. — A boy just under the age of 2 has died after being hit by an SUV delivery truck on Bellingham Street at around noon Saturday.
The 19-month-old boy, a Chelsea resident, was struck in front of 74 Bellingham St. by a livery vehicle that had just picked up a passenger, police said. He suffered severe head trauma.
He was taken by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The boy was with his mother when he was hit by the vehicle, which was a Toyota C-HR, state police said.
A 45-year-old woman who was driving the Toyota remained on scene. She was sent by ambulance to a local hospital after complaining of chest pain. Investigators interviewed the driver at the hospital.
A neighbor shared very graphic cell phone video with Boston 25 detailing the horrific moments after the accident.
The video shows the driver of the Toyota pulling over after striking the child, and a woman crying and screaming while cradling the injured boy in her arms on the sidewalk. It also shows first responders performing CPR on the child.
Boston 25 spoke to the woman who took the video, and she said the mother of the toddler was screaming right after it happened, and that everyone immediately ran outside and called 911.
“The mother of the baby said, ‘Somebody, I need help! I need help!’ And everybody came out,” said Blanca Avimdono of Chelsea. “I have trauma for this baby, you know.”
Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes said his department is working with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office to determine if the driver will face any charges.
Further details on the accident were not immediately released.
The Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is currently investigating the accident.
