We live in New England, so we know how to handle a little snow. And while this isn’t ‘Snowmageddon’ by any means, preparations were underway all day Friday and into Saturday morning.

Many people, however, took advantage of the snowy Saturday and were out and about the city.

Some were ice skating, others were building snowmen, but almost everyone was snapping pictures of the first snowfall of the season.

City Hall Plaza was about as scenic as it can get, with snow falling and dozens of skaters taking to the ice all day Saturday.

Crews cleared paths for people to walk during what was a fairly quiet night in downtown Boston.

On a day where many chose to stay indoors, others were soaking up the feeling of the first snowfall of the season.

"It's awesome, I love the winter, the snow is great, nice, light and fluffy. It started accumulating around three and it's been awesome," said Sager Florio.

On Friday afternoon, a winter weather advisory went into effect across the entire state.

Saturday morning, Boston 25 News reporter Kelly Sullivan spoke with a truck driver who was hoping to get his route finished before the snow ramped up.

"I've been driving for 24 years, so I know about all this," he said. "I don't want to deal with all the traffic and all the snow coming down, so I'm just gonna go home."

However, it wasn't just all fun and games today for those out in the snow.

Plows were out all day Saturday preparing the roads and working to keep them clear so everyone had a safe drive.

Temperatures dropped Saturday night, and that's when the plows were the busiest working to keep those roads clear as snow continue to fall.

Many drivers on I-90 in Framingham saw other cars skid off the road on Saturday.

The most important thing to remember when driving in the snow is to take it slow - so everyone can get used to the new normal of the season.

MassDOT tells Boston 25 News that more than 2,100 crews are working late into the night Saturday to plow state roadways.

However, since that slush has now turned into ice, the speed limit on the Mass Pike was set at 40 miles per hour between exit 11 in Millbury and the New York border. That speed limit decrease was lifted around 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

Despite the weather, plenty of holiday shoppers headed out to buy gifts and trees.

The first measurable snowfall comes to the greater Boston area in mid-December, and we generally average about nine inches for the month, according to records.
