BOSTON — A problem has sprung up inside the brand new $88 million government center MBTA station.
Blue Line riders on the lower level of the station are dealing with a leak on the platform that comes all the way from street level.
MBTA officials say it's a combination of the construction on Court Street coupled with the melting snow that has created a new headache for engineers.
“It's too bad it wasn't found before this was done,” Marilyn James said on her first time visiting the new station.
Just two weeks ago Gov. Baker and T officials cut the ribbon on the Government Center station right in front of city hall.
Wednesday the MBTA told FOX25 the drip was caused by melting snow and the construction on the street above. Right now water sealant is being used to plug the holes.
"Waterproofing sealant may need to be applied on rare occasions in the future because Government Center's 100 year old main tunnel walls and roofs are still in place."
Baker said the problem would be fixed in the next 48 hours.
"Based on the preliminary reports I got this is an isolated incident that I don't expect or anticipate will become a recurring concern,” he said.
Some passengers aren't surprised there's already a problem.
"Can you imagine what it's like underneath us? There's got to be so many tunnels and cracks and rat tunnels and whatever else,” Bob Wagstaff said.
In addition to the water sealant, MBTA authorities have added a tarp over the construction area.
