PROVIDENCE, R.I. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - Rhode Island's governor says there have been layoffs at Curt Schilling's troubled 38 Studios, while the former Red Sox pitcher tells us he's not looking to the taxpayers to help bail him out.
Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee declined to say just how many layoffs occurred at the company.
"I believe it was a mix of who made payroll and a number of layoffs," said Chafee after leaving a meeting with Rhode Island Economic Development officials and representatives from 38 Studios, including Schilling.
Amid a crush of reporters, Schilling told FOX 25, "We're not asking the taxpayers" for more money.
Before he was whisked away in his waiting SUV, Schilling also said "there is so much misinformation out there that I cannot clear it up with a sound bite."
Back in 2010, Rhode Island gave 38 Studios a controversial $75 million loan guarantee. The company has used $50 million.
On May 1, 38 Studios missed a payment. Now Rhode Island state leaders are trying to figure out a way to help the company stay afloat.
Governor Chafee, who was critical of the loan at the time that it was made, called the video game industry tough and competitive. He said if Schilling wants to bring in a "deep pocketed investor," he's open to that idea.
Both sides have agreed to keep what is said in the meetings confidential. It is still unclear when the next meeting will occur.
