IPSWICH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) - Police are investigating a swatting incident that occurred in Ipswich Thursday evening.
On Oct. 1 around 7:45 p.m., a man called 911 and reported he had harmed his girlfriend and was going to harm responding officers.
Ipswich Police and the Cape Ann Regional Response Team secured the area and canvassed the neighborhood where the caller had provided an address. They determined the caller had made up the story in order to have a large amount of law enforcement respond, also known as swatting.
"We determined this was a false report specifically designed to illicit public panic and unrest," Chief Nikas said. "The suspect took away valuable resources that would have been needed in the event that a real emergency had occurred."
The investigation remains open and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ipswich Police Department at 978-356-4343.
