Hyatt inquiring about closing of franchised hotel in Braintree

BRAINTREE, Mass. — Hyatt appears to have been left in the dark about the closing of its franchised hotel in Braintree.

Boston 25 News obtained a copy of the ‘WARN Act Notice' Hyatt Place Boston/Braintree General Manager Steven McClure sent to Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan on November 8. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of covered plant closings and covered mass layoffs.

"The Hotel will be permanently shutting down its operations, commencing on or about January 18, 2020," McClure wrote. "As a result, all of the Hotel's (currently 60) employees will be permanently laid off between January 18 and 31, 2020."

Sullivan's chief of staff, Joe Reynolds, told Boston 25 News the mayor's office later clarified the scheduled closing is only temporary while extensive renovations are undertaken by the property owner.

"The Mayor's Office expects to receive further clarifications, along with updates, on the matters of future operations and any potential management changes in yet to be finalized meetings with the property management representatives," Reynolds said.

When asked about the closing, a Hyatt spokesperson told Boston 25 News:

"This is a franchised hotel that is owned by Carpenter & Company and operated by HEI Properties, and we do not have adequate information to respond at this time. At Hyatt, we care for people so they can be their best so we are reaching out to the hotel's owner to learn more, especially about how this affects our guests and the hotel's employees."
