QUINCY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Will March bring kinder weather? The warmer temperatures will certainly bring more hassles, especially for homeowners. People in Quincy are already putting protections in place.
The general rule of thumb is every foot of snow equals a gallon of water, and when all of the snow in the Bay State turns to water, it will need somewhere to go.
Some are saying this is the winter that keeps on giving... headaches.
Jimmy Hazelton has been helping his sister keep the snow at bay, and cleared a couple feet of snow from his roof Friday. The bright sun and milder temps are already causing trickling troubles.
"All this water damage is killing her. It's a lot of money," he said.
The feet of snow piled around homes will start to melt in the coming weeks and at Curry Ace Hardware, they are arming people with sump pumps.
Home inspection officials say that as soon as the temperatures go up, start clearing the snow from around your home's foundation. Also dig paths away from the home to the melting snow can drain away from your house and toward the storm drains. Until the ground thaws, snow melting is just going to run to the lowest point, which may be your basement.
Other homeowner must haves this spring will be wet/dry vacs, fans to air out wet basements and floor squeegees. A metal shovel is also a good investment because as the snow melts and the temps fluctuate the snow will keep re-freezing so a plastic shovel may not be able to break it up.
