Hot air balloon lands in MBTA parking lot, damages cars

GRAFTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com / AP) - A hot air balloon landed in a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority parking lot, damaging at least two parked cars Tuesday.

Transit police say the balloon planned to land in a nearby field in Grafton, when a strong gust of wind knocked it off course at around 9 a.m.

Police say the balloon, owned by Damn Yankees, then made a hard landing in the lot. There were seven people aboard including the pilot Derald Young. None of them were injured.

"It was one of those embarrassing things is all,” Young told FOX25 over the phone. "It was not any error on my part per se. We were running out of spots to land and (expletive) happens is all."

MBTA officials said they consider the investigation closed and will not be reporting it to the FAA.

FOX25 has learned this isn't the pilot's first brush with a crash landing. In 2014 Damn Yankee Balloons was operating a balloon that struck power lines causing an explosion and sending five people to the hospital.
