Social media initiative ‘Takeout Tuesday South Shore’ helping restaurants remain in business

HINGHAM, Mass. — Mike Sheehan opened his Norwell restaurant, Cheever Tavern, in July, during the height of the pandemic.

“I would estimate 65% of our guests, maybe 70% of restaurant-goers, just aren’t eating in restaurants right now,” he said.

That big of a drop in indoor dining hurts the bottom line, so in an effort to help restaurants like Cheever Tavern, a social media initiative called Takeout Tuesday South Shore was launched.

It’s a push to encourage families to support South Shore restaurants by ordering takeout, so they can remain in business.

“Takeout Tuesday South Shore” was just created by Amy Cowan of Hingham. She said it isn’t limited to just dinner.

“It could be a smoothie after a workout, lunch for your busy remote student at home or it could be dinner,” Cowan said.

According to the latest numbers from the Massachusetts Restaurant Association, 3,400, or nearly 22%, of the roughly 16,000 restaurants in the Commonwealth have closed for good during the pandemic.

With indoor dining capacity limited to 25%, food to go is a lifeline for most restaurants.

“On many nights it’s probably a third of our revenue, but it also allows people to enjoy our food which is important when this is all over,” Sheehan said.
