Faneuil Hall businesses struggling as tourist, foot traffic fall amid pandemic

BOSTON — A new report shows Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market restaurants and businesses are struggling during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Boston Globe, one-fourth of the restaurants and vendors have either closed for good or have yet to reopen since the pandemic started.

After two decades in business, the Cheers replica bar shut down on Sunday, and the popular tourist eatery Dick’s Last Resort closed for good weeks ago.

Even as stores and restaurants have been cleared to reopen throughout the state’s reopening plan, travel restrictions, occupancy limits and nearby offices that have remained closed have all negatively impacted foot traffic at the historic marketplace.

Some Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market businesses told the Globe their sales are down 85-90% compared to July and August of last year.

The Globe reports the businesses’ landlord – Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. -- has agreed to defer rent payments for April, May and June (when the businesses were forced to close for the pandemic) until 2021, however, many business owners said they need their rent forgiven for those months.
